Fantastic Book

May 30, 2006

I just finished reading Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind and all I can say is WOW! I found this book so insightful. I have been to many conferences where the facts about Asia and automation have started to look at what our students are going to need in the work place, but I haven’t had much input on what we are to do about it or rather how what all the conference workshops are about will actually help this. Pink’s book definitely defines why all the changes that are occurring need to occur. I have forward this book on to a colleague and have mentioned it to several others. I would love to make this recquired reading for all of our teachers. Why? Well, I think it would really show them why our students are not engaging in the classrooms. We have a problem with attendance at our school as well as students not wanting to be in class or engaging when they are there. We want to blame our no-accountability attendance policy and we want to blame the parents or society. However, I feel our teachers really need to look at these kids and realize that what they need for success in the future is not the same. So, their approach to teaching needs to be different. How to get that one across to individuals who are already complaining could be an interesting task…
